What is AMH?
AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) is made by the small follicles in your ovaries. Each follicle holds an immature egg. More follicles means more AMH in your blood, so AMH works as a marker of ovarian reserve, the number of eggs you have left.
Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have. That number falls every year, which is why AMH also falls with age.
AMH Level by Age Chart
AMH values differ between laboratories and testing methods, so always compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report. The ranges below are typical values used as a general guide.
| Age | Typical AMH range (ng/mL) |
|---|---|
| 20 to 25 years | 3.0 to 4.0 |
| 26 to 30 years | 2.5 to 3.5 |
| 31 to 35 years | 1.5 to 2.5 |
| 36 to 40 years | 1.0 to 1.5 |
| 41 to 45 years | 0.5 to 1.0 |
| Above 45 years | Below 0.5 |
How doctors read the number
- Above 3.5 ng/mL: High. Often seen with PCOS.
- 1.0 to 3.5 ng/mL: Normal ovarian reserve.
- 0.5 to 1.0 ng/mL: Low. Worth a specialist consultation, especially if you plan to delay pregnancy.
- Below 0.5 ng/mL: Very low. IVF may still be possible, but planning should start without delay.
Does Low AMH Mean I Cannot Get Pregnant?
No. This is the most common misunderstanding. Women with low AMH conceive naturally every day, because you only need one good egg each month. AMH predicts how many eggs may be collected in an IVF cycle. It does not reliably predict natural pregnancy.
What low AMH does mean is that your fertility window may be shorter. If you are trying to conceive and have low AMH, it is sensible to get a full fertility evaluation early rather than waiting a year.
Common causes of low AMH
- Increasing age (the most common reason)
- Previous ovarian surgery, such as cyst removal
- Endometriosis, especially endometriomas (chocolate cysts)
- Chemotherapy or radiation
- Smoking
- Genetic factors or early menopause in the family
What Does High AMH Mean?
A high AMH usually means many small follicles, which is a typical finding in PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). High AMH is not a sign of better fertility on its own. Women with PCOS may ovulate irregularly, so they often need help with ovulation. During IVF, high AMH also raises the risk of OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome), so the doctor adjusts the medicine dose.
Can You Increase AMH?
There is no proven way to increase egg numbers significantly. Some supplements are marketed as “AMH boosters,” but evidence for them is limited. What you can improve is egg health: stopping smoking, keeping a healthy weight, managing thyroid and blood sugar, and taking only the supplements your doctor recommends.
When Should You Get an AMH Test?
- You are over 30 and planning to delay pregnancy
- You have been trying for 12 months (6 months if you are over 35)
- You have PCOS, endometriosis or a history of ovarian surgery
- You are considering egg freezing
- You are preparing for IVF
AMH can be tested on any day of the menstrual cycle with a simple blood test. Your doctor will usually combine it with an antral follicle count (AFC) ultrasound and FSH for a complete picture.

At Ayuh Fertility Centre in Ranip, Ahmedabad, Dr. Krupa Shah never makes a decision on AMH alone. Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good AMH level to get pregnant?
For natural pregnancy, there is no minimum AMH. For IVF, a level between 1.0 and 3.5 ng/mL usually means a good response to stimulation.
Is 0.8 AMH good at age 35?
It is lower than average for 35. Pregnancy is still possible, but a fertility evaluation is advisable soon rather than later.
Can AMH change from month to month?
Small variations are normal, and results can differ between labs. A single low reading should be interpreted alongside an AFC scan.
Does the birth control pill affect AMH?
Hormonal contraceptives can lower AMH readings temporarily. Tell your doctor if you are taking them.
What is the AMH test cost in Ahmedabad?
The cost depends on the lab. Ask our team for the current price when booking.
